#20 – Growing Your Social Capital

Domain Expert Interview: The person I reached out to was Brittany, who is a Garmin Ambassador. I chose Brittany as my contact since it seemed more reasonable to speak with her than it would be the CEO (basically knew I would never hear back). I found her on Hoovers and it was only her number so I contacted her through LinkedIn, and have not yet heard back. However, having her in my network would enhance my ability to exploit an opportunity because she knows an abundant amount of information about the product that I would like to produce, and I think just having her as a contact in general would be very beneficial. She could help direct me in the right way since she is very knowledgeable about the industry itself. Market Expert Interview: I interviewed Hannah, who is a college-aged female that lives about 2 hours outside of Chicago. She runs very frequently, participates in all types of organized races, and has actually used different types of watches, therefore she is in my targeted ...

#19 – Idea Napkin No. 2

1) I am Taylor Butler, and I am a student in the ISOM combined degree program. My talents include having good time management, being very detail oriented, and understanding the importance of working on a team. My experience includes internships and other jobs that have prepared me for my future endeavors. My aspirations include having a successful career that will be more operational focused. I think it would be cool to eventually work for a sports team or athletic based company. Regarding my business concept, I see my business as an integral part to my career and where I want to eventually end up. By developing this app, I will have an advantage by understanding athletes (specifically runner’s) needs, and use this knowledge for future opportunities. 2) I am offering an app and accessory ankle bracelet for runners. This would solve the unmet need of trying to sustain a consistent pace when participating in outdoor runs. Essentially, the app and anklet would calculate your target pace...

#18 – Create a Customer Avatar

Image
It was hard to narrow down what I wanted my avatar to be. However, I decided that the typical customer that I imagined for my business concept was a college aged female (even though my business concept equally supports males). She likes to work out (whether it be at the gym or outside on a run), and is very interested in sports. She doesn’t use her car that often because she likes to bike to class. She has a dog that she likes to take on walks and play with at the park. She’s very in to nature and the outdoors. She likes to hike in her free time, or just go for long walks and explore new places, which explains her interest in travel. She doesn’t have cable TV, and instead watches Netflix when she wants to relax. She is a “sneaker head” with multiple shoes from Nike, Adidas, and Brooks, and she prefers to wear athletic clothes over anything else. When I decided which business concept I wanted to pursue, I thought of something that would solve a problem for not only others, but for m...

#17 – Elevator Pitch No. 2

link to pitch:  https://youtu.be/VGw_n-7lqNY Reflection: - Important: my first pitch showed that I was knowledgeable in the subject of running. people are always more interested to buy from you if you seem knowledgable and can convince them that you know what you're doing or talking about.   - Surprised: nothing really, expected positive criticism and positive comments about my pitch. - Wrong or silly: everything was useful! - Most useful: posing questions may attract interest such as facts or statistics, stand up and be dynamic to show you’re passionate about your product, ask for feedback at the end about your pitch Change:   - I stood up and was more dynamic with my hands during the pitch.  - I added in a statistic to try and add effect, while deleting other unnecessary information.  - I dressed for the product that I am trying to sell, aka an athletic top.

#16 – What’s Your Secret Sauce?

My List: 1. Detail-oriented / Diligent. I’ve always been a very structured and organized person, and I like things to be as accurate as possible. I’m very attentive to details. I guess this kind of ties into being diligent too, because I’m a hard worker who values the work I do. I know when to ask for feedback, and I use my time efficiently when it comes to assignments and other responsibilities. 2. Mediator. I am someone who does not enjoy conflict. I try to avoid it at all costs. So usually if conflict occurs, I quickly try and mediate the situation before it gets any worse. I feel like this has always been a pretty good trait because I can see both sides of the argument, and usually bring together the two parties who are unhappy. 3. Teamwork. I believe teamwork is the most valuable resource, and that it’s crucial to success in life and in business. I grew up as an athlete, so I’ve always had the team mentality. I have always enjoy being part of a team, but I think what I love ...

#15 – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

Same segment as assignment #12. Interview 1: My first interviewee really focused on if the quality of the alternative was reasonably priced for what it offered. Style wasn’t so much an issue, as to quality and what information the alternative devices and applications could provide, such as timing or tracking distance. She was more likely to buy online because it was easier to read other people’s reviews of the product and make a decision that way, instead of dealing with salespeople who pressure you to specific items that you may not want. She also knew that she could easily return the product online if it wasn’t exactly what she wanted. Because it’s an online transaction, she uses credit cards to purchase. She said that what helps her determine whether the product was good or bad depends on if an updated version comes out very soon after she buys, or if the product satisfied all the necessities she was looking for. Since she was focused on quality, her main post-purchase evaluation w...

#14 – Halfway Reflection

Image
1) Tenaciousness is a competency. Time management is the most important behavior one should use in this class. For people with busy schedules like me, attending live lectures can be super difficult so I have to rely on the recorded versions. It can be very easy to forget about them during the week, and then when it comes time to complete a cupcake, you have to catch back up. There are also assignments due every week. Keeping a schedule of due dates and staying on top of assignments is super important for this class. You can go at your own speed, but be careful not to fall behind! By knowing how to manage your time, you can complete all assignments before the deadlines and not feel super stressed at the end of the week. This has really helped me get through not only this class, but others as well, and has also forced me to better my self-discipline and organizational skills. 2) Tenaciousness is also about attitude. There are many times when some of these assignments take longer than...

#13 – Reading Reflection No. 1

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in running or how Nike got its start. 1) Honestly, I was first surprised at where the name Nike came from. It never occurred to me that it would come from the Greek Goddess Athena, and stand for “victory.” Also, the entire process that Phil Knight went through in order to get Nike started and how far it’s come today is truly inspiring. He went through so many obstacles, but never lost sight of his end goal. He’s an ideal candidate for what ambition looks like. I admired how he never gave up on his idea or company. He was a very driven individual, and you could tell he was passionate about his product and running in general. His belief in running and in the shoes made customers irresistible to buying, which really helped kick start his business. Knight also claimed that the company had “no fear of failure” meaning that yes they knew they had potential to fail, and actually had every expectation to fail, but if...

#12 – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Segment: Individuals, between the ages of 15 to 55, with a running lifestyle who have a goal of maintaining a consistent pace Interview 1: This person fits my target market because she is a runner who actively trains for races, such as half marathons and full marathons. She obviously notices this need during her long runs when she’s training to see what pace she can sustain in order to achieve her goal finish time. This need becomes super prevalent to her when she notices herself gassing out really early or noticing that she can’t run as far at the same pace even though she could do it the other day. The only solution she has is to check her split time after every mile and hope that it stays somewhat consistent. She tracks all her times, but again it’s hard for her to know if she’s staying consistent during her run. She will Google what other people do to maintain pace, but nothing has really worked well for her so far. Interview 2: This individual is aware of this need mid-run when ...
